FAQ

What is the difference between a psychotherapist, a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

There is confusion about the difference between psychiatry, psychology, and psychotherapy. No wonder. Here it is in a nutshell:

  • Psychiatrists are medical doctors who prescribe medications.

  • Psychologists specialise in assessing and diagnosing mental illnesses.

  • Psychotherapists specialise in making fundamental changes to a person's attitudes, values and personality.

Both psychiatrists and psychologists use some psychotherapy techniques, more or less, but they don't specialise in tearing down and rebuilding people like psychotherapists do.

Psychotherapy explores the deep structures of the mind, brings them to light and uses them to build a new you that is ready to live the life you want.

The three disciplines have completely different approaches to mental health. If you go to a psychiatrist, you will be given drugs. If you go to a psychologist, you will be told you have a mental illness. If you go to a psychotherapist, you should leave as a different, better person.

Who is this for?

Therapy is for guys who are struggling with:

  • Anxiety: not knowing how to turn up with the resolution and strength you need to live life on your own terms

  • Relationship difficulties: being unable to be with other people in a simple, easy manner that lets everyone be happy

  • Feeling like a failure: sometimes you know you are made for a better life but just can't seem to get things together.

  • Acceptance: learning to accept the things you can't change and feel at peace with yourself.

  • A mind that seems out of control: being able to discipline your mind to control your bad tendencies.

  • Living the right life: only you can know what your proper life is, and working it out can be a journey in itself.

  • Just knowing you're a great guy: it's hard to just be with yourself and be content. But that is the ultimate goal of therapy: to make you happy with yourself.

How is Strength and Wisdom Therapy delivered?

  • One to one video sessions.

  • One Discovery session

  • 5 Fixing and Building Sessions

Strength and Wisdom is delivered 100% online. You'll get emails and text notifications for when sessions are scheduled with a link to an online video session. All you need is a computer or laptop with a mic and cam. Most laptops have built in cameras and microphones.

The program consists of a discovery session where we go over your issues, your life, your goals, your obstacles, your strengths etc. Then we do five Fixing and Building Sessions where we get down to work ripping out your dodgy wiring and installing your new equipment.

After your Discovery Session I will write up your case and develop a Road Map for how we will move forward. In the next session we will go over that to make sure it is just what you want.

Then we will go on to the Fixing and Building Sessions. These are direct, to the point and all about getting results ASAP. We might examine the causes of why your life is not satisfactory. We might do extensive training in relationship management. We might develop a toolbox of techniques to keep the worry at bay. After every session you'll get a summary and some things you'll have to do in the next week. I keep this easy, but this is work and work requires some effort.

By the end of six weeks you'll feel like a different person. Confident to take on the world and powerfully competent. In control of yourself. That's what I mean when I say results.

How is it designed for men?

This is a different type of therapy designed to work with the male mind. Men have completely different physical bodies, hormonal systems, psychologies, personalities, and needs than women. I spent five years training to be a psychologist before switching to psychotherapy and worked in various roles across the mental health industry and I can tell you this: it's all designed for women, their needs and how they operate. Men are barely given any consideration.

  • Strength and Wisdom is a different type of therapy specifically for men. We still deal with the clinical stuff, but we just do it quick and get on to the important things.

  • Think of it like having a builder who gets through the testing and permits quick smart so they can start building straight away.

  • One discovery session to work out the problems and goals then five sessions of fixing and building.

  • This is a results focused therapy program. That's really different. Most therapy is all about the process. Sitting and stewing in your negative feelings for years is the normal process. Sometimes that works for women, but it misunderstands how men think and what they want. We want results, not endless navel gazing.

  • This is short term. Because if I can't sort your problems in six weeks I won't be able to do it in six months or six years. I make no excuses. I do a good job of work, I do it quick and I get paid well for it.

  • And if I can't get you sorted out, I'll look you in the eye, apologise, and give your money back.

What do I need to participate?

All of my communications are via email, so you will need an email account you check regularly. The sessions are delivered via online video, so you will need a laptop with a camera and microphone ( most laptops have them built in). You'll also need a private space where you won't be disturbed and where no one can hear you. That's all.

How can you get results so quickly?

Performance under pressure. No excuses. Do real work.

  • Performance under pressure. Quite simply, people perform best under pressure. The six week deadline puts pressure on me to only do important work that will make a real difference, not just work on fluff that will give you the warm and fuzzies but won't shift the needle.

  • No excuses. Because I centre accountability at the the heart of all my practice. We're men, not women. We don't get to make excuses. I will not let you lie to yourself. We have to hold ourselves accountable for everything we do. When guys get together and make that the centre of things, excuse making just fades away. And excuse making is the main obstacle to making progress in therapy.

  • We do real work. Because I will push you harder than any other therapist will. I'm not your friend. I'm your therapist and I will make you work hard, because everything worth having requires hard work, even mental peace. You will face things about yourself that you don't like. But facing those things squarely like a man will let you move through it and past it so much more quickly than you will by dancing around it for years in traditional therapy.

It's that simple: performance under pressure, no excuses, do real work. It sounds simple because it is simple. A simple, effective solution is always better than a complex process that goes nowhere.

What therapy modalities do you use?

On the top layer, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Existential Counselling and Motivational Coaching. Beneath that a layer of Gestalt Therapy and Somatic Training and underneath it all is a bedrock of Jungian Psycho-Analysis.

How is this different from other therapy?

Tailored for men, six weeks, money back if you don't think you benefited.

  • The specs: it's six sessions of direct, focused psychotherapy work. No BS time wasting and navel gazing. We assess, we analyse, we fix, we build. And then you get on with life how you want it to be.

  • You choose a time for a discovery session. We do the session. If you want to continue, then you pay. Or you don't. You're in control.

  • We don't mess around with emails and calls back and forth. I'm busy, you are too. You just book the discovery session that's available. They are after hours, so you'll be able to find a time.

  • I use therapy which is specifically designed for the male mind. It's very goal focused and it isn't just sitting around talking about how bad you feel.

  • I'm a man and I understand you better than any female therapist ever will. Because I'm like you, and I've been through it and come out the other end I know what really works. For men.

  • If you complete the sessions and don't feel like you've turned a corner in your life, I'll refund your money. No worries.

  • Because I only get paid if you succeed I am uniquely motivated to get in, do a good job and and get your engine running ASAP.

Is this evidence based?

Yes, all of the therapy techniques have solid evidence backing.

Will I have to do homework?

Hey, if you want results you have to put in the work. But don't worry. It's not homework like at school.

Behaviour change is one of the main goals here and you can't change your life without getting off your butt a little. So yes, there will be homework. You'll have stuff you have to do between sessions that will build up the new competence we work on in session.

This stuff is mostly practical and and designed to change the way you mentally approach your life. It might be doing stuff you've been afraid of, trying out new relationship techniques, or practising nervous system control. Or maybe something different. But don't worry, I respect your time and there is no meaningless busy work. It will always be just what you need.

Above all I make sure you always understand exactly what we're trying to achieve.

Is it private?

100% confidential. I only collect the minimum information required by law and store it securely. Your details are not stored in the cloud or uploaded to any third party sites.

I never discuss my clients, share their information or publish their details. If anyone contacts me about a client I do not reply. There is no way anyone in your life could find out you are seeing me unless you tell them.

Why does it cost that amount?

Because I'm very good at what I do and I deserve to live a good life.

Other therapists take years to do half of what I achieve in six weeks. I charge three grand. They'll charge 15 or 20K for two years of therapy. If I charged the same rate for a session as they did I would be punishing myself for being fast and good.

$3000, six weeks and a money back guarantee vs $20,000, two years and if they fail, well, it sucks to be you. That's why it costs what it costs. Because it's good value.

Will you really refund my money?

Absolutely. I am 100% confident in my process. If you complete the program and don't feel like you got the benefits, then I'll refund your money. And I'll even cover the payment transfer fees (almost $100). Ask yourself why no other therapists will make that offer.

I don't have mental problems. Is this still for me?

Sure. This isn't just for guys with serious mental problems. If you're at a point in life where things just don't seem right, then this is for you.

I don't approach therapy from a single point of view. I have such a wide experience and range of technique that I can tailor my approach to exactly what each guy needs. Maybe you are trying to hold a relationship together, or get out of one. Maybe you know you're capable of more in life but you're not quite getting there. Maybe you're feeling flat and meaningless, or you're just trying to work out how to go forward.

These are all issues guys talk to me about and get great resolutions.

I have a diagnosis of disorder X. Is this for me?

Let me get jargony for a second. Mental disorders are of two types: bio-genetic (like schizophrenia) and socio-cognitive (like anxiety).

Only a very few mental disorders are bio-genetic. The vast majority are socio-cognitive. Which means they are caused by how you think and how you interact with the world. That's totally under your control. And control is what Strength and Wisdom Therapy is all about. I know that is a challenging thing to sit with, because you've been on the Big Psych merry-go-round and they taught you that your mental disorder is not your responsibility. They probably taught you to make it part of your personality. To let it define who you are and how you turn up in the world.

But let me ask you this. Did that fix you? Remember, the longer you stay in therapy, the more money they make.

Having a diagnosis or not having a diagnosis doesn't matter. If you're ready to see yourself as a winner, if you're ready to put it behind you. Then this is for you.

I have a history of therapy. Will this still work?

You're the perfect candidate. You've experienced the frustration of failed therapy, so you'll be ready to go to new places and try new approaches. This is so different, and we get results so fast, you'll totally reconsider what therapy is.
